Danes have been celebrating this evening since the 1700s and the short version goes something like this:

Morten did not want to become a bishop, so he chose to hide among the geese.

This hiding place was not the best choice, as the geese cackled and revealed his hiding place.

 

Therefore Morten could not avoid becoming a bishop and he declared each house to slaughter a goose and have it for dinner.
